Project Zongo

Project Zongo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, grassroots organization with a mission to improve the lives of thousands of residents in Accra and elsewhere in Ghana, who suffer from over-crowding, unsanitary conditions, unemployment and unacceptably small living conditions.

A Temporary “Fix” Becomes A Decades-long Problem.

A “Zongo” is a temporary settlement created during an early 20th century period of migration into and within the nation of Ghana. These settlement happened, but later became permanent. The largest Zongo community is located in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Some 800,000 souls live in this haphazardly built collection of shacks. High density, open sewers, minimal infrastructure, no parks or hospitals, very narrow streets and walkways, goats, chickens and families all live together in the Accra Zongo community.

Improved Housing

Project Zongo has a vision to begin replacing existing “ramshackle” single story dwellings with well-designed three story buildings, each unit having two bedrooms, an interior kitchen and bathroom and a sitting room.

Skills Development

These modern, moderate sized living units will be  built by local residents, newly trained by Project Zongo staff experienced in both construction techniques, as well as the community-based organizing.

Income Generation

through this process Project Zongo will provide income, employment, improved environmental conditions, larger homes and hope for the future to this neglected population, empowering the people of the Zongo.

Working together, sharing our knowledge and resources we can empower people in the Zongo.

  • Average dwelling consists of 150 square feet with no interior kitchen and one toilet per 20 households.
  • The main source of family income (averaging $1000 per year) is street vending by men, women and children.
  • Education is a luxury in the Zongo community. With minimal government provided public education, most schools are privately run and available only to those who can pay.
